~*~ Review ~*~ Nightwish (Echoes of Eternity #1) by Sydney Bristow

26081611

Blurb:

Serena Sykes just discovered that the mother, identical twin sister, and niece she never knew existed…are the last remaining witches on the planet. That is, except for Serena, who recently received her own limited, albeit wildly erratic supernatural abilities.

But her newfound family isn’t interested in helping her master those gifts. After all, Serena’s mother has been communicating beyond the veil with the first witch in their line, a sorceress named Zephora who hopes to return to this dimension and destroy an ancient curse that would unleash paranormal creatures across the globe.

To help guide her in this new landscape, Serena turns to her grandmother, an elderly woman suffering from dementia and the only vampire in existence, a man who has his own mysterious agenda. With less than 48 hours to prevent her family from triggering a supernatural wasteland, Serena must learn to control her abilities…if she hopes to save the world!

My Review:

Firstly I would like to thank the lovely Sydney Bristow for kindly providing me with a copy of “Nightwish” to read and review.

I am more than thrilled and looking forward to reading the next instalment of this, little-cherry-on-top-of-the-tree-book, I totally FLOVE anything paranormal – winner winner, chicken dinner 🙂

In Nightwish we meet Serena Sykes, a graduate who recently finished her degree from college and was brought up by her grandmother (who unfortunately more recently was diagnosed with Dementia) due to her real mother high-tailing it out of there when Serena was just a baby…tut tut tut

But what happens when the life you thought you lived wasn’t the complete truth?

What happens if you find out the one person you trust the most has betrayed you deeply?

And what happens when you find out that there is more to your life than you new?

Serena just got a boat load of information thrown at her.

She now has powers, she has a family, her family is a long line of witches, and things are just going to get complicated.

As Serena tries to come to terms with this knowledge, she realises that her grandmother is not quite herself, could the dementia be getting worse at a faster rate?

Or could it be foul play supernaturally?

I found Serena to be a tad naive and lost, but hey if I had my world turned upside I think I’d be the same.

Wouldn’t you?

Serena only has so much time to learn her powers, stop Zephora and deal with a witch of a mother and sister who are far more powerful than she.

The storyline was a very good start, definitely a getting to know you and your world scenario but with plenty of twists and turns to keep you on your toes.

What’s it about?

The Debt Collector

I pay my debts, and I expect others to.

I was raised in the slums of London, I knew nothing of privilege. My father was murdered when I was seventeen. Morty figured my father’s passing meant I would automatically take on dad’s debts. I refused.

And I paid for that refusal.

So did my sister.

So now I fight. All I know how to do is fight. The best cash is in the states, so that’s where I am now. A big fish called Vito came along offering me a “favor” when I arrived.

Another debt.

I paid for that one too.

I knew Kyla Hensley would be trouble when I met her. But I wanted her. I could see through the falsehood of her wannabe-slutty clothes and her sexy legs. So I chased her.

Besides, trouble is my middle name.

Kyla Hensley

I was brought up in privilege, but I lacked everything else. My father is a business tycoon who buys and sells and doesn’t care who gets rolled over in the process.

I never knew my mother, and all I have of her is a photo with a note scrawled on the back in French saying “I’m sorry.” The only Female Figure I had growing up is my dad’s wife who is a bleach blond with seven boob jobs. We never bonded.

I drink. I party. I meet guys.

But I wasn’t always like that.

I’ve had a string of lovers in the last few years, the worst and most recent of which was Vince Somerset. My best friend Vera was dating a guy called Rory Cansoom who is the opposite of Vince in so many ways, and yet so the same.

She and I hit the road for the summer, getting away from the two college psychos and just trying to have some fun.

But there’s a funny thing about trouble, the more you run from it, the more it finds you.

Which is when I met the Debt Collector.

It was only supposed to be sex. He made that clear. I made that clear.

That’s all it was supposed to be.

I never expected to fall in love. I never expected to fall so deeply, madly, uncomfortably in love with a man who is wrong, so wrong for me.

And yet…so unbelievably right.

My Review:

Firstly I would like to thank the lovely author for reaching out to me and providing me with a copy of “Rescue Me” to read and review.

Van-Hulzen is a newbie author for me, but from what I’ve read in “Rescue Me” I’d gladly read more of her breathtaking work.

So seen as I’ve  come in at the half way point, it’s safe to say that I will be reading books 1 & 2, not that it matters, as the 3rd I believe can be read as a stand-alone, but I would like to read the others so I can see how Torie & Keith first met in this series.

We start with a woman named Torie is currently taking a break during the Christmas holidays to go and stay at a friends cabin while they are on their honeymoon, and what a beautiful cabin and picture the author portrays.

Although Torie comes across as the tough cop, she has a history that haunts her and has left her completely broken on the inside.

She struggles so much with what she should or should not share with those around her.

As Torie and Keith spend more time together and really begin to open up to each other, we get to witness such a sweet love develop

I believe these two love birds have already met in a previous book in the series so there was already a smidgen of a spark going on between them. They went from spark to flame pretty quickly

I recommend checking out this series and of course this book.

It is the perfect book to cuddle up in front of a fire with and drinking a cup of hot-chocolate and marshmallows.

Excerpt:

6d5bc-excerpt

“Mother,” Evian stated curtly, trying to regain some semblance of control of his erratic heart rate.

“Son,” she responded just as curtly. She’s going to dish it as well as he gave it, he thought to himself.

“I just left Auntie Vivi’s, and I can’t say that I’m all too pleased with what she told me,” Evian stated, trying not to allow his mind to drift too far away from his purpose. He didn’t want to dwell on the pain of what his aunt had revealed.

“I can’t say that I am all that pleased that your auntie chose to share what was not hers to share,” his mother stated in response.

“How is it that you have a belief that this was not hers to share? How is it that you actually believe that I didn’t have a right to know . . . to understand? Are you really that cold and unfeeling?” Evian asked, knowing that the fire was building within. A fire that was causing his mind to dwell on the heartache her coldness made him feel. He tried to squelch the fire within and returned his focus to his true reason for being there. She spoke before he could continue.

“I have taken certain . . . liberties in my life . . . and with your life. Such things I don’t feel obligated to explain because every choice that I made was for the betterment of our family,” she stated with an edge to her voice as she pointed between the two of them. She then leveled him with the cut of her eyes. “You think that your Auntie is telling you tidbits about yourself and our family because she wants you to better know yourself?” she asked, but it seemed to be more of a statement since she really asked as if she knew he had no rational response.

The question was there, but it was spoken with such distaste and annoyance that Evian couldn’t possibly know if he should attempt to actually answer or not. He warred with himself. If he came up with a response, would it be enough to have his mother thrown off by it? Would it be enough to warrant his frustration or wipe the all-knowing look off of her face? His internal battle continued. After a couple moments of silence, she lifted her eyebrows and shrugged her shoulders. This was always a signifier that she was waiting with not-so-bated breath for his reply, but was also preparing to move on to another subject or dismiss him. Evian decided for the fight versus flight approach.

“She has been the one that picked up the broken pieces of me when you were too busy to do it,” he seethed. He felt the flames of fury being fanned and with that feeling came a more callous attitude. Evian began not to care that Katerina was his mother or that they were two sides of the same coin.

“Just how do you think she came to be the person who was there to put those ‘pieces’ together? Did you ever see her going off to work? Did you ever see her taking care of the menial day-to-day tasks like grocery shopping? Paying the bills? Shopping for your clothing? Schoolbooks? Did you ever see her personally take you to any appointment? Or game for that matter? Was she ever on the sidelines cheering you on? Did she ever have the conversations that made you the man that you have become?” she sat, finally, as if she were exhausted from having a conversation that she’d had countless times before. Could it be possible that she may have thought on this conversation happening between the two of them? No. That wasn’t possible. His mother was just that in name only.

“The question or questions should be did I see you doing any of those things,” Evian threw the words at his mother with all of the resentment and dejection that he felt inside.

“You’re Calan’s sister?”
She slid her fingers to the column of his neck. “Half sister, yes. All the riders of the Hunt were fathered by Arawn.” She grinned, showing off straight white teeth. “Besides you, of course.”
He swallowed hard. The mention of the Lord of the Underworld put a whole new spin on Tegan’s heritage. “You’re a demigod.”
Not just any lesser god either. She’d been fathered by the black-skinned, winged creature he’d seen when he joined the Hunt. Arawn’s image had appeared inside his head, much like Tegan’s had over the years they’d visited each other. The sight of him hadn’t bothered Ian. Knowing his dream lover carried Arawn’s genes did.
“Yes, I—”
“You knew me before I joined the Hunt, didn’t you?” He had to be sure she’d participated in his dreams, that it wasn’t only his imagination.
Her nostrils flared. “I don’t—”
“Yes or no, Tegan. Have you invaded my dreams for the past three years?” Making me yearn for you?
She leaned over him. Inches from his face, she leveled a hard glare at him. “Yes. We shared the same dream, but don’t interrupt me. Ever. I don’t like it.”
He filed the information away and dropped his attention from her irritated eyes to her lips. He licked his. No matter what other form she could take or who her parents were, she was still the woman who’d made him question everything. He wanted to know why she’d connected with him. Beyond that, he wasn’t sure how he felt about knowing she was actually alive. He wavered between wanting to fuck her and punishing her for messing with his life.
“I know how you like to be touched. Loved.” He glanced into her eyes. The same look of smoldering desire she’d worn for him whenever he’d connected with her darkened them. More black than brown, they captivated him. They had from the first moment he’d peered into them. “Don’t I?”
“You don’t know anything about me, Ian.”
The animosity in her voice didn’t match the scent of her arousal or her quickened heartbeat. He didn’t understand where her anger was coming from.
“But I want to. I want to know every detail.” Then and only then would he decide what to do about her. “Kiss me.”
She bent closer but remained out of reach. Her breath heated his lips. Vanilla, the tempting and addicting scent he’d craved as much as the woman, invaded his lungs. He strained to close the slight distance. She remained out of reach.
He growled.
She pulled back with a grin plastered on her sultry mouth. “Is that my warning?”
Although still mainly human, the acceptance of the Huntsman’s mark had altered certain aspects of his body. He acted more animal than man at times. The low rumbling deep in his chest proved it.
“Yes.” He allowed another growl to trickle from his lips. “Kiss. Me. Now.”
She skimmed her parted lips across his cheek. The simple touch rocked him. He froze. At his ear, she caught his earlobe between her teeth and tugged, tearing a rough sound from him.
“We’re going to have to work on your obedience, Hunter Ian. You don’t order me around. That’s my job.”
Her sultry voice tightened his balls. Her words, though, pissed him the fuck off. “Between us, the only power you have over me is what I give you.”
She chuckled. “Is that so?”
“Yes.”
She straightened and skimmed her heated gaze over him. His skin tingled under her focused perusal. With a single finger, she traced the length of his arm from shoulder to wrist.
She tapped the cuff locking him to the bed. “These turn the tables, don’t you think?”

My Review

Firstly I would  like to thank then lovely author for kindly providing me with a  copy of “Hunter Forsaken” to read and review.

Nancy Corrigan has done it again.

Whisking us the readers off into a world full of Demigods, Angels, Demons, Fairies and Huntsmen.

At the end of the first instalment we find out that Ian has succumbed to the rage, anger and insanity that can happen with new Hunters.

Tegan has spent a millennium being tortured, killed and mentally abused thanks to the dog on curse her father, Arawn caused.

I like Ian. He goes through a lot of changes in a short amount of time; initially not dealing with it well but able to come to grips. Tegan struggles with her curse. She discovers a lot about herself in this story and grows considerably.

The chemistry between them was off the charts.

The way that Corrigan developed their relationship both physically and emotionally created a whole that not only left the pages sizzling, but also tugged at your heart.

But will both pasts hold too much weight for them to get over.

Will Ian’s love he enough for Tegan?

This series just keeps getting better and more intense.

Intrigue winds its way through the fast paced plot, creating ties that weave through the entire series, while leaving this novel complete in and of itself.

AboutTheAuthor

A true romantic at heart, Nancy Corrigan is convinced there’s a knight in shining armor for every woman (or man), but you won’t find damsels in distress in her stories. She adores pairing alpha heroes with women strong enough to match them and bring them to their knees. She also enjoys flipping the traditional roles in romances because her motto is—love and people should never be forced to conform to anyone’s norm.

She holds a degree in chemistry and has worked in research but now focuses on ensuring quality. She considers it the perfect outlet for her as she’s the first to admit she has some OCD tendencies. It carries over into her writing life too. While engrossed in a novel, she has a habit of forgetting to eat and sleep. Fortunately, she’s married to her own knight in shining armor who understands her oddities and loves her anyway. They reside in Pennsylvania with their three children, dog, snake and guinea pigs. Her other interests include tattoos, animals, classic cars and all things spooky and sexy.
