Twelve years ago, Jolene’s adoptive mother died. Twelve years ago, a man showed up at Jolene’s door and promised to take care of her. Twelve years ago, Jolene was happy.
Then it all changed…
Jolene Bergio has spent the last twelve years of her life asking one question… Why? Why was she left in the custody of a man who would sell her each and every night to the highest bidder? After a few years, she shut off, giving up hope that anyone would ever find her. Until her luck changed one night and she escaped. Twelve years later, she finally feels something she hasn’t felt in a long time… Free.
Scared that her past will find her unexpectedly, she hides away in a rented beach house, trying to distance herself from everyone… Until Dr. Cameron Bowen enters her world and slowly tears down the walls that she has built up over the past twelve years of her captivity. Jolene begins to learn to love again.
And trust again.
But when a man from Jolene’s past emerges, will she be able to keep her identity hidden? When lies are told and hearts are broken, will the truth surface in time to bring Jolene back from the shadows that threaten to expose who she really is?
Heart of Light is a captivating story of love, strength, and survival.
“Jolene,” Cam said softly. “If there’s anything you ever want to tell me, I’ll listen. Whatever you say will stay between us. No one will ever know.”
“No one can ever know,” she whispered.
Cam shook his head. “You can’t keep it all inside. That’s too big of a burden to bear. No one should go through it alone.”
A tear fell down her cheek as she processed his words. She knew they were true. She was fucked up beyond help, but she just couldn’t bring herself to share her past or her present with anyone. At that point, it would make it real. She wanted to pretend that none of it happened. That the last ten years of her life was a dream. That her current situation was just a nightmare that she had to suffer through to get to the next sunrise so she could see Cam’s smiling face. It was the only way she could survive.
“Don’t assume you know so much about me and what I’ve been through.”
Cam sighed, turning his car onto Duval Street. “I don’t know everything about you, but I’ll tell you what I’ve learned since I met you. You hate when people see you cry because you don’t want them to think that you’re broken but, at the same time, you wish someone would notice how beaten and defeated you really are.”
She opened her mouth to respond, wondering how, in just a few short months, he was able to peer into her soul with such accuracy.
“You hate when people don’t listen to what you have to say because it makes you think that your words aren’t as important as they are. But, at the same time, you don’t want anyone to hear the story that you tell with your eyes.”
She tore her gaze away from him, focusing on the brightly-colored hotels that zoomed by.
“You hate the idea of letting anyone see the real you, so you put on a front. That’s where your sarcasm and wit come into play. You use it to make sure that no one can see what’s under your hard exterior, the pain and agony that’s slowly torturing your soul. You hide it all inside and shoulder the burden alone, not wanting to pull anyone down with you. But you need to relieve some of the weight off your shoulders, Jolene, or you’ll get pulled down and I’ll never be able to get you back. And that thought breaks my fucking heart.”
Holy Effin Shit!
It seems like I’ve been waiting forever in anticipation since the ending of Leigh’s A Beautiful Mess Series, to finally have the story of….Cameron Bowen….SWOON!
Once again Leigh has proven to us, the readers, what an amazing author she truly is and that her abilities to write such brilliant page turners are under-rated…..personally I feel she doesn’t get the recognition that she truly deserves, and I am blessed to be one of the lucky few bloggers on her street-team 🙂
My heart broke little for Cam in ABM, he swooned and swayed, but ultimately wasn’t the one for Olivia unlike the ever-so-panty-dropping Alexander Burnham….
Jolene has had a life changing experience whilst growing up, She was forced into a life that none of us can imagine and is the unthinkable, a life where she wouldn’t be able to find her way out for the foreseeable future, so escaping to a small beach town seemed promising, if she could just go with the flow and keep her head down and not get to know anyone she might be able to hide.
“Do you promise you’ll never hurt me?” Her voice nearly broke his heart. “Never. I want to help you come back from your darkness. I want to be the light in your life. Even if my presence is the only light, I want to be that for you.” She reached for him, clutching his hand in hers.”
Cam…..oh my dear Dr Cameron Bowen….what am I to do with you…reeling from his loss of love in Olivia (Burnham’s Bitch, I say this with good intentions) he’s flung himself into his work…he too has demons from his past, which I am looking forward to reading of in Heart Of Marley
Cam will stick with your heart and make you appreciate kindness and patience all over again….
“At that moment, she knew he was her light…her ray of sun in the storm of her life. The only thing that would rid her world of darkness was Cam and his touch. She no longer feared it. She craved it above anything else.”
Oh did I tell you that the ever-so-hot, and the panty-dropping-mega-drooling-sex-on-legs makes a cameo in this…
“Alex, it’s Cam. You know all those favors you owe me? I’m cashing in every single one of them right now. My friend’s going to email you a video that I think we may need to use as leverage. I need your help in Chicago.”
There are some haunting scenes that will leave you with more than just goose bumps….
This story follows the human trafficking issue that is much more prevalent than some of us would like to imagine.
Not only does Leigh weave layers of this subject matter but she brought life to her characters in Cam and Jolene. The journey of their love has no words. It’s one of those rare love moments you can only dream to find. A love that has no bounds, that is light and brings hope. A love that heals and that cannot be extinguished. The emotions are real, the independence that Jolene desires will make your heart swell, and abuse that she suffers will make you weep.
And just when you think you know what is playing out, the author will throw all of your thoughts and emotions out the window.
“In the darkness of nights, a glimmer of hope will appear.”
Will Cam be able to save her, or will he lose the one person that helped make him feel love again?

It wasn’t until recently that she decided to try her hand at creative writing and is now addicted to creating different characters and new and unique story lines in the Contemporary Romantic Suspense genre.
When she’s not planted in front of her computer, writing away, she can be found running and training for her next marathon (of which she has run over fifteen fulls and far too many halfs to recall). Unlike Olivia, the main character in her Beautiful Mess series, she has yet to qualify for the Boston Marathon.
