The Book of Shade
Author: K.C. Finn
Release Date: 12/13/13
Lily Coltrane’s to-do list for starting university life is pretty simple:
1. Make friends
2. Meet a cute guy
3. Survive her first year in Modern History
In the little English town of Piketon this seems more than achievable, so much so that Lily even joins The Illustrious Minds Literary Society, an extra-curricular club that promises a truly unique social experience. What Lily doesn’t bank on are the Society’s monthly visits to the mysterious Theatre Imaginique at the edge of town, a dark venue that houses the most obscure cavalcade of carnival performers she has ever laid eyes on.
Stranger still is the emergence of the theatre’s enigmatic proprietor Lemarick Novel, a stupendous showman with a frosty wit who never seems to smile, and who raises a plethora of questions in Lily’s fearful mind. How does he levitate with no sign of wires or mirrors? How do the lightning bolts that shoot from his hands look so real? And why, of all the people in the theatre, do his pale eyes keep locking on hers?
The answers to this and more lie buried in heritage and blood. The Book of Shade is opening, and Lily Coltrane will read it, whether she wants to or not.
“I’m sorry I frightened you.”
It wasn’t what she’d expected to hear. She looked up at the conjurer to find him leaning on one fist, staring at a spot on the floor between his knees. He ran a long-fingered hand up into his pure white hair, that wayward curl escaping just a little down into his face.
“It’s just I’ve never had to do this before,” he rambled with agitation, “I’ve never met a shade who didn’t know they were a shade.”
That creepy sensation that she was talking to a madman slowly forced Lily’s heart-rate up, but she cleared her throat as calmly as she could.
“I don’t understand you, I’m sorry.”
Novel looked up at her, one side of his mouth curling downwards as he bit the inside of his lip. He suddenly put his hands on his knees and reclined in the chair, letting out a short breath.
“Do you ever dream about being buried alive?”
“Well yeah,” Lily answered, her fingertips quivering where they gripped her own shoulders, “But it’s a very common fear.”
“It’s one hundred percent common among shades,” Novel replied.
That word again.
“And tell me,” he continued, “Do you have much luck getting electronic things to work for you?”
“Not really,” Lily mumbled.
“Neither do I.”
Lily could hardly imagine the man before her ever having picked up a mobile phone. The malevolent insistence he’d had at the theatre wasn’t present now as they sat together in the empty room, there was just a quiet authority to Novel that reminded Lily of the first time you meet a new librarian. He leaned forward again and held out his hand, his palm up to the ceiling. In the blink of an eye tiny flickers of fire began to grow just above his skin, slowly transforming and twisting until they formed a full sphere of little dancing flames. Lily studied his hand carefully, looking for an indication of where they had been generated.
“This isn’t an illusion,” Novel explained quietly, “Put your hand out.”
First off I want to thank the author for providing me with an ARC Copy of this book to read and review for this tour 🙂
This will be my first book to of read by this author, and I always get nervous when reading new material 🙂
WELL…… I don’t know why I enjoyed this book.
For some reason it took me a while to get into, but I think this was me, as whilst reading I wasn’t well and was under the influence of drugs to recover from a virus and secondly I was under stress from work, so I think it was me that couldn’t get into it straight away, but I soon did pick it up… and oh boy, I couldn’t put it down!
Novel AKA Lemarick….yeah my first impression was creepy older guy eyeing up his prey, but as the story developed I loved this guy!
Yes, he’s old fashioned
Yes, he needs to loosen up a bit (crack a smile in a while )
But he is a new babe for me 🙂
Your constantly on edge whilst reading this, you can never guess what’s going to happen, because the minute you do….BAM K C changes the WHOLE dynamic of things!
I loved Jazzy, she’s such a quirky character and I do hope we see more of her
Jeni…..Oh how I love you !
She’s such a free, kindred spirit (Hahah no pun intended for those who have already read it)
But don’t let the innocent young women fool you, she has a temper and isn’t one to back down.
This is full of magic, lust, family secrets, new beginning, and lost of twists and turns 🙂
Can’t wait for the next 🙂 Bring It On!
